CHAPTER ELEVEN

Ro leaned against the closed door of her room, her heart beating so fast her blood was rushing faster than the T’s red line at rush hour. She’d felt Awan’s sudden passion for her like a wave crashing over her at the beach. It took her breath away. This bonding was more intense than she expected. Either that or it was specific to her and Awan’s connection.

Her heart started to slow as her mind switched focus to Takoda. It bothered her that she had bonded to him, but he hadn’t to her yet. Would it ever happen?

She pushed away from the door. She’d only known the men a week and spending more time with Takoda alone was on her to-do list. Quickly, she used the bathroom and put on a pair of sneakers. Walking on the packed dirt streets of Tolba was a lot rougher than wandering around the house bare foot or in a pair of flip flops.

Muskwa. It was an odd sounding competition. It made her think of mud wrestling for some reason. For all she knew it was much like table tennis or golf. She liked watching both because neither had many accidents. It was that risk manager inside her that she just couldn’t seem to turn off. Sometimes it got in the way of her enjoyment, especially when viewing others.

“Are you ready?” Awan stood at the door as she entered the living area. That he was excited was obvious.

She quickened her step. “What’s in that big bag besides food?”

“It is just food and drinks. I packed a separate bag for you, too.”

“For me?” She walked through the front door, which he held open for her.

“Yes.” He took her hand in his large one. “My training lasts half a day and I do not want you to grow hungry.”

His thoughtfulness once again struck her. She’d dated a guy on Earth who ran in the Patriot’s Day marathon. He’d asked her to come cheer him on, but never told her where would be the best place to stand or park or even where to meet him afterward.

Though Takoda definitely had the easiest way to go about the city, Awan’s large physique made her own path rather easy as she followed behind him. The streets were seriously crowded in this hatchoc. It didn’t ease up until they started to ascend a small gradual incline.

He stepped to the side to allow her to walk beside him. “This path will have less men.”

She glanced behind them to double-check her observation they were ascending. “Are we going to one of the three hatchocs at the center of Tolba?”

“Yes. My training is in the Dickinson Complex, but my competitions are in the Cheetans’ Complex.”

Now that was interesting. “I thought the Dickinson Complex was for artistic endeavors and the Cheetans’ was only for important governing matters.”

Awan smiled and his posture straightened a bit more. “That is true. The Muskwa has been a tradition of our people since we were first brought to Eden. It was originally designed to determine the best warriors to lead the citizens in war.
